Back Pain, especially in the lower back (lumbar spine), is a problem that most people experience at some time in their lives. The muscles that support the spine are in constant use; even while simply sitting, the muscles are in use to keep one from falling over. The spine also bends, straightens and twists. This constant stress on the back can result in back strain and pain. As a rule, most episodes of back pain are caused by mechanical disorders associated with overuse of the back and spine, or the gradual changes associated with aging. In about 10 percent of the cases, back pain is caused by a systemic illness. The low back pain is the second most common ailment affecting 80% of the general United States population at some point in life. The pain may either be acute or chronic and is usually caused by a variety of diseases and disorders of the lumbar spine. Low Back pain is usually accompanied by sciatica. Sciatica is a pain that involves the sciatic nerve and affects the lower back, the back of the thighs and buttocks. They protrude out and press on nerves running the spinal column. This pressure causes discomfort and sometimes pain. The discs, however, have not burst or become herniated, and one of the main things doctors will prescribe for this is bed rest. However, there are some exercises and therapies that can aid in healing the disc. Doctors perform laminectomies, discectomies and spinal fusion surgeries when noninvasive treatments fail to manage chronic neuropathic back pain. Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS), or Post-Laminectomy Syndrome, is the chronic neuropathic pain left unrelieved by spinal surgery. 2.Malignancy Low back pain that is not relieved even after a night's rest, maybe caused by a tumor in the cauda equine (the roots of the spinal nerves controlling sensation in and movement of the legs), or cancer of the prostate, breasts or lungs, maybe caused because of a history of smoking, sudden weight loss or old age. Hydrocollator packs are hot packs used to warm tissue and aid in healing, according to the insurance company Aetna. The hot packs are typically canvas bags filled with silica gel, which absorbs water. The hot packs are then wrapped in toweling and applied to the affected area to warm the body tissue. Chronic back pain caused by sciatica is frequently linked to depression. The debilitating effect of limitations to movement can have a profound effect on the psyche. Unfortunately, the apathy that comes with depression can leave you unable to take action that could lessen your back pain, and ultimately inaction can make your back pain worse. So goes the endless circle of pain and depression. Everyone gets tingling sensations in hands and fingers from time to time, or feelings of "pins-and-needles," but these symptoms usually disappear as quickly as they appear. When they don't disappear, this may indicate you have a problem with your spinal nerve channels-a condition called foraminal neuropathy. The sciatic nerve is the nerve that starts within your spinal cord and goes through your buttock, hip and, finally, through each leg. There are five sets of nerve pairs that comprise of the sciatic nerve (Abitbol). If one of these nerves gets pinched within the spine, it can cause sciatic nerve pain. Even a disc that protrudes from the spine (a herniated disc) can cause symptoms of the sciatic nerve. There are several issues that can cause sciatic nerve pain. Vidus Vidius. Chirurgia. Cl vi p271. Venice. 1544 (as quoted in the November 1956 issue of the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England Vol 19, pp269-295) This article describes the author\'s initial conventional medical training and how it left him unprepared to deal with treating chronic pain. He then goes on to share a series of discoveries that helped him understand the root cause of pain disorders through understanding the mind body connection and the role of unconsciously suppressed emotions. Back pain is typical today, and quite a few folks have it but do not know how to treat the pain. In this document you will discover some helpful approaches to cope with your back problems without resorting to damaging or addictive drugs. Decompression therapy pertains to relieving pressure on the spine to treat back pain, herniated discs, numbness and several other conditions related to the spine. Spinal decompression seeks to relieve the vertical compression of the spine and maligned vertebrae and discs. The structural problems of the spine put pressure on the nerves, causing symptoms. Spinal decompression can involve surgery, but the term "spinal decompression therapy" generally refers to non-surgical stretching out of the spine, or traction, along with additional procedures to enhance effectiveness. Lumbar spinal stenosis is when the spinal nerve canal narrows, which puts pressure on the spinal nerves. This causes pain when the individual is standing erect or walking.
